Welcome to the World Famous Panther Navy!
The NJROTC Program was established by Congress as a part of the Reserve Officers Training Corps Vitalization Act of 1964. The program went into effect in high schools in 1966. President George Bush approved a major expansion in the program in 1992, bringing the total number of Navy programs to 435 worldwide. In the first year of the expansion, the Nease High School unit was commissioned in August 1993. The NJROTC program recently went through another expansion, establishing new units nation-wide totaling over 600 units.
There are thirteen NJROTC units in the Greater-Jacksonville Area. The local area has a large concentration of NJROTC units as any metropolitan area in the United States. NJROTC Area-12 is comprised of 59 units in NE Florida and most of Georgia.
Beginning in their first year of eligibility, Nease NJROTC cadets earned the distinction of Navy Honor Unit for four consecutive years, which placed them in the top 20 percent of units nationwide. In 2000, the Navy changed the criteria for honoring their top units. A new designation, Distinguished Unit, identifies those schools that place in the upper 30 percent nationwide. The Nease cadets earned this honor in the last nine years, and were named again in 2009. All Nease cadets are entitled to wear the Distinguished Unit Ribbon, or Bronze Star of subsequent awards.
In 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007 & 2009 Nease NJROTC was selected as the most outstanding unit in their Area/Region; in 2004 they received the distinction of SECOND in the nation at the NJROTC National Academic and Drill Competition and in 2009 returned to Nationals placing SIXTH in the nation.
During the school year of 2008/2009 Nease NJROTC accumulated over 4,100 hours of community service. This year, the World Famous Panther Navy celebrates the completion of 16 years of service to the school and to the community.
